Heat pump sales: +11% in Europe
April 28, 2026A group of major U.S. companies – including Google, Amazon, Salesforce, and Autodesk – has launched a global initiative to tackle one of the most urgent issues in industrial refrigeration: emissions of super-pollutants, particularly fluorinated refrigerant gases (HFCs). With an initial fund of $100 million, the project aims to support concrete and scalable interventions by 2030.
The initiative, led by the Beyond Alliance in collaboration with the Carbon Containment Lab, focuses on engaging entire supply chains. The goal is to help companies reduce emissions across the value chain, from suppliers to end customers, through technological and managerial strategies that make cooling systems and facilities more sustainable.
Focus on reducing high-GWP refrigerants
Fluorinated gases used in compressors, industrial refrigeration plants, and air-conditioning systems currently account for 3–4% of global greenhouse gas emissions, surpassing sectors like cement or aviation. With the growing demand for commercial and industrial cooling, reducing these emissions has become a strategic priority for the industry.
The program will create a dedicated roadmap to identify the most effective technologies and projects for cutting high-GWP refrigerant emissions. The first guidelines will be made public by the end of the year, aiming to foster collaboration among companies, suppliers, and investors in the industrial refrigeration sector.
In addition to funding, part of the initiative focuses on training. The Superpollutant Academy will offer courses and tools to operators who purchase or manage carbon credits related to super-pollutant reduction, strengthening sector expertise and improving sustainable refrigerant management.
A specific track is the Scope 3 Refrigerant Initiative, which focuses on indirect emissions along supply chains. The initiative will gather technical and economic guidance on refrigerant leakage reduction strategies, with concrete proposals expected by 2026.
For industrial refrigeration operators, this alliance represents a tangible opportunity: not only funding for technological innovations, but also guidelines and tools to manage high-impact refrigerants and facilities sustainably, contributing to sector decarbonization and future regulatory compliance.
The world of industrial, commercial, logistics, freezing, and cryogenic refrigeration will convene at REFRIGERA, the international industry event, taking place at BolognaFiere, from November 10 to 12, 2027.
